The creative combination of Maria (meaning “beloved” or “drop of the “sea”) and Luisa in Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese led to Marisa, which in turn led to the variant spelling Marissa (particularly in the United States).

Marissa found its way to popular usage in the United States in 1963. It climbed the popularity charts quickly and was in the Top 100 by 1989.
